Greetings from South Africa, June 2008
Love it out here. The first time I came out was about four years ago with Counting Crows. For some reason none of the other bands I have been with play in South Africa. I remember being in awe of all the fans we had out here..... nothing has changed. Last night we played for 15,000 in Johannesburg. The crowd was amazing, cheering and singing along on every song. It is very satisfying to have this kind of support so far from home. The day before the show Immer, Adam, Charley and I were on a popular TV talk show called 3talk with Noleen Maholwana Sangqu. It is a bit like Oprah except better. She was really cool and we even talked about being on the road so soon after my marriage and my upcoming honeymoon in Italy during the show.
Pink Pop was a blast. The whole band got off stage on a serious high. Regardless of what the gig is we always come to get down, but even better when we are in the zone at such an important gig. My only regret was we could only listen to a tiny bit of Rage Against The Machine after our show. They all came out for the first song wearing Abu Ghraib prison masks and proceeded to kick some serious ass. This was the best environment for watching these guys but alas, a long drive to London awaited us.
We had to make the 2 am ferry ride. If we did, the estimated time of arrival at the Hotel was about 4 am or so. Going to sleep for an houror two on the bus and then having to wake up and check in to your roomis extremely unpleasant, so the whole band vowed to stay up together. At first this looked like a good decision with our bus driver (Hans Peter) putting the hammer to the floor as we were the last entry on tothe ferry. It was even more of an epic journey as Dan was commentating every moment like a Formula One race announcer in his best british accent... "Hans Peter into turn number four.... he is really
